Request for Volunteers for TWU Committees

The Telecommunications Workers Union (TWU) wishes to advise the membership that there is at present vacancies within the following appointed committees:

  1. TWU National WCB Strategy Committee
    Convention 2008 MOTION PASSED ON SATURDAY, MARCH 8, 2020

    BE IT RESOLVED that we strike a committee with the mandate to develop a National Strategy to provide assistance to our members with WCB applications and appeals; and

    BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this committee be comprised of one representative from Executive Council and a Delegate from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario and Quebec to be appointed; and

    BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED that the committee bring the National Strategy back to Executive Council and the membership, no later than the 2009 TWU/STT Convention.

  2. TWU Solidarity Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Solidarity Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
    The Solidarity Committee acts as a conduit between the TWU membership and Executive Council. Their responsibilities will include gathering and disseminating information about the needs and issues facing our members, and to develop strategies to enable the Union to take a proactive stance in advancing the interests of the membership and the labour movement. Working in concert with other unions and in conjunction with other TWU committees, this Committee will help facilitate local involvement and encourage membership participation and activism on a continual basis. The Committee will meet mostly through teleconference and much work is done on the Committee members' own time.

    Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the Committee. currently requires 1 Alberta members and 1 member from Quebec and 1 from British Columbia.

  3. TWU Human Rights Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Human Rights Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
    The Committee generally meets 4 times a year either in person or by conference. You would be expected to keep yourself informed on current Human Rights issues within your workplace as well as communicate these issues to the rest of the committee. In addition you will be expected to attend the 2008 TWU Convention.
    It is preferred that members have experience in the area of Human Rights and/or Respectful Workplace, are good communicators and have a strong desire to protect the rights of others.
    Consideration is to be given to ensure regional representation on the committee. The committee currently requires 2 Alberta members and 1 member from Quebec and 1 from British Columbia.

  4. TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Contracting Out, Monitoring and Action Committee which was created at the June Executive Council meeting is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee. The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to assist in monitoring the contracting out of members' work and making recommendations to Executive Council in order to protect the interests of TWU members. It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions and are good communicators. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  5. TWU Technology Committee
    TWU is looking for young members to participate in the Union's newly created Technology Committee, whose purpose is to study new technology and its possible effects on our members. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the Union can do to prepare for and to respond to new technology. Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  6. National Health & Safety Committee
    The National Health and Safety Committee is looking to fill vacancies and newly-created positions. Only TWU members in good standing working in the following areas will be considered:
    • One from Flagging certification
    • One from Quebec

    Preference will be given to members who have health and safety experience and/or training, but members who have an interest in learning about health and safety issues will be considered. Duties of members appointed include the following; promoting health and safety in their respective area, providing input to the committee on issues in their industries, and will be responsible for following up on health and safety concerns with their employer. As well, they will act as a liason for members in their respective workplaces with respect to health and safety issues, including ergonomics. The committee meets, either by conferencing or face-to-face meetings, up to six times per year, as required, but members are also required to follow up on issues or projects between meetings.

  7. TWU Language and Cultural Committee
    TWU is looking for members from the ethnic and cultural communities to participate in the union's newly created Language and Cultural Committee. The purpose of this committee is to reach out to members from ethnic and cultural communities in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the union can do to promote participation of members who belong to Canada's various ethnic and cultural communities.

  8. TWU Political Action Committee
    The TWU wishes to advise members that the TWU Political Action Committee is seeking members in good standing for appointment to the Committee.
    The Committee will generally meet by teleconference. You would be expected to become involved in political action in your surrounding community.
    It is preferred that members have experience in organizing planned actions, are good communicators and have a strong desire to involve people in political action and action campaigns.
    Consideration will be given to ensuring regional representation on the committee.

  9. TWU Youth Committee
    TWU is looking for young members to participate in the union's newly created Youth committee, whose purpose is to reach out to our young members in an effort to better address their needs and concerns. Members of this committee will meet via teleconference to discuss relevant issues and to make recommendations to the TWU Executive Council on what the union can do to promote participation of our younger members.
